Fresh Drumsticks (Moringa / Sahjan / Murunga) β€” Delivered Across the UK

Drumsticks β€” known as Moringa, Sahjan, Murunga Kai, or Shevga across South Asia β€” are long, slender seed pods from the Moringa tree, widely celebrated as one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables in the world. A cornerstone of South Indian, Sri Lankan, and Pakistani cooking, drumsticks lend a subtly earthy, slightly sweet flavour to slow-cooked dishes, where their tender flesh and seeds are scooped directly from the pod as you eat β€” a truly immersive dining experience.

At Curry Kart, our drumsticks are freshly sourced and selected for length, firmness, and deep green colour β€” indicators of freshness and peak flavour.

Why You'll Love Them

  • Subtly sweet, earthy flavour that deepens beautifully during slow cooking
  • One of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available β€” exceptional even in small quantities
  • Rich in iron, calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and protein
  • Naturally anti-inflammatory and widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine
  • The tender flesh and seeds inside the pod are edible β€” simply scrape out as you eat
  • Adds authentic flavour and body to South Indian and Sri Lankan dishes

How to Cook with Drumsticks

  • Sambar β€” the quintessential South Indian lentil broth; drumsticks are the most traditional addition
  • Drumstick Dal (Sahjan ki Dal) β€” cooked with toor or moong dal, turmeric, and a tadka of mustard seeds and curry leaves
  • Drumstick Curry β€” simmered in a rich coconut or tomato-based gravy
  • Drumstick Soup β€” a light, nourishing broth, especially popular for its health benefits
  • Shevga chi Bhaji β€” Maharashtrian-style dry sabzi with peanuts and coconut
  • Murunga Kai Kootu β€” South Indian style with lentils and freshly grated coconut

How to Prepare

Cut into 7–8cm lengths. Lightly scrape the outer skin if desired (not always necessary for young pods). Add to curries and dals 10–15 minutes before the end of cooking. To eat, hold each piece and scrape the tender flesh and seeds out with your teeth β€” discard the fibrous outer shell.
