We've all been there.
You carefully measure the rice, add the water, and wait patiently...
Only to end up with sticky, clumpy rice instead of the light, fluffy grains you were hoping for.
The good news? It's usually not the rice — it's the cooking method. Here are five simple fixes that can make all the difference.
1. Always Rinse Your Rice
One of the biggest mistakes is skipping this step. Rice naturally contains surface starch, which causes grains to stick together during cooking.
Rinse your rice 2–3 times until the water runs almost clear — you'll notice the difference immediately.
2. Soak Basmati Rice Before Cooking
For authentic Indian basmati rice, soak it for 20–30 minutes before cooking. This helps the grains absorb water evenly and cook longer and fluffier.
"Dal ko thoda waqt do — aur chawal ko bhi." Give the rice a little time, and it will reward you. ❤️
3. Don't Use Too Much Water
More water doesn't mean better rice. For most basmati rice, the right ratio is:
- 1 cup rice
- 1½ – 1¾ cups water
Too much water makes rice soft and sticky. Trust the measurement.
4. Let It Rest
When the rice is cooked, resist the urge to remove the lid immediately. Leave it covered for 10 minutes.
The trapped steam gently finishes cooking the grains to perfection — without any extra heat needed.
5. Fluff With a Fork — Not a Spoon
Use a fork to gently separate the grains rather than stirring with a spoon, which can break and mash them together.
Light, careful fluffing is the final touch between good rice and great rice.
⭐ Grandma's Bonus Kitchen Secret
Add a teaspoon of ghee or a few drops of oil to the water while cooking.
It helps keep the grains beautifully separate and adds a subtle, wonderful flavour that takes plain rice to another level. 😉
